Communication methods have changed immensely since the days of Guglielmo Marconi and Alexander Graham Bell. In late 2012, Johnson County REMC completed the installation of 115 miles of fiber optic cable spanning our entire electrical distribution network and linking substations back to the REMC office. The potential now exists to offer high speed fiber network communication services to local businesses, schools and offices. In addition, a pilot program is underway to consider the strategic goal of providing local residences with a full range of end use fiber optic communications.

What are the practical applications of fiber optic communications for an electric utility such as Johnson County REMC, and what do you see as the greatest benefit of this technology for our members, businesses, and the community?

Essay Criteria

The essay must be 1,000 words or less, typed and must include any sources used. Please be sure your NAME is on your essay before mailing or uploading.
