More than eighty-three years ago, farmers from the rural areas of Indiana created a legacy, a legacy that remains a thriving industry today… the Rural Electric Cooperatives. With the help of the Rural Electrification Act, these not-for-profit organizations were brought together by the very farmers and ranchers who had never experienced the benefits of having electricity in their own homes. Electricity brought huge benefit to the American farmer; through Johnson County REMC, an Electric Cooperative, the local farmers not only had electricity in their homes, but they shared decision making responsibility and established an ownership share in the cooperative. It created change and progress.

Please attach an essay, in your own words, on the following: “My Community Legacy”.
Please discuss: How your college education will improve yourself, impact your community, and how rural electricity and technology have helped in your education so far?

Essay Criteria

The essay must be 1,000 words or less, typed and must include any sources used. Please be sure your NAME is on your essay before mailing or uploading.

Judging

A scholarship committee consisting of REMC staff will select their top four choices from the entries and present them to the Board of Directors for their review and final selection.

Award Presentation

The scholarship will be awarded at the Johnson County REMC annual meeting to be held on April 13, 2019.

Funds Disbursement

Disbursement of the $2,000 award will be made directly to the college or university upon enrollment of the scholarship recipient. An official enrollment verification is required to process the disbursement.
